There’s no doubt you’re already enjoying the look of your beautiful, straight, white smile – and you want to keep enjoying it for years to come. Caring for your dental implants is an important part of keeping your teeth and mouth healthy long-term.

Dental Implants

Here are a few things you should make sure you’re doing:

Get the right toothbrush.

It’s easy – and inexpensive – to select a good-quality toothbrush, whether you have dental implants or not. If you have implants, you might want to consider an inter-dental toothbrush. These brushes are designed to clean around bridges and other dental work. This can be particularly helpful right after your procedure when you’re experiencing some tenderness. If you have questions about the right toothbrush for your implants, talk to your dentist.

Use fluoride.

It’s true that dental implants are highly resistant to cavities and teeth decay (hooray!). That said, your gums and your remaining natural teeth aren’t. That’s why it’s important to continue using a toothpaste and rinse containing fluoride. You should be brushing at least twice daily with fluoride toothpaste.

Floss, floss, floss.

You might think your teeth are bulletproof now that you have dental implants, but even if you have no natural teeth left, your gums still need some TLC. That’s why it’s super important to keep your flossing regime up. Periodontal disease could lead to dental implant failure, which means losing the beautiful smile you’ve just received. No way!

Watch the sugar.

We had to go there. While dental implants don’t decay, excess sugar can still cause plaque buildup, which in turn causes gum disease. As we said previously, gum disease is a major cause of dental implant failure, so you don’t get a free pass at sugar.

Keep your appointments.

Even a mouthful of dental implants should still have a dental check-up now and then. If you have dental implants, don’t use it an excuse not to see your dentist and hygienist. These professionals can help identify any potential problems and make sure your mouth, gums and implants are in tip-top shape.
