Worst Habits for Your TeethYou call it a nervous tick, or maybe just an innocent pastime. But those little habits of yours may have more consequences than you thought – and your teeth could be paying the price. In fact, seemingly innocuous habits like nail biting could have serious effects on your teeth. Here are the worst ones:

Avoiding tap water

If you’re a “bottled water” snob, you might think you’re healthier than the general population. But tap water actually contains fluoride, which can help strengthen your teeth. If tap water isn’t an option for you, make sure you’re getting a good amount of fluoride in your mouthwash or toothpaste.

Biting nails

Not only does nail biting help spread germs and disease, while making your hands look sore and unsightly, but it can also damage your teeth. Nail biting can lead to chipped teeth and broken dental restorations.

Sugary beverages

If you have to have a sugary soda every day, you’re not doing your teeth any favors; bathing them in that sugar can lead to tartar build-up and promote tooth decay.

Chewing ice cubes

If you feel the need to chew ice, which can crack and chip teeth, you may have an iron deficiency issue. Talk to your doctor about it soon.

Brushing teeth after acidic foods and beverages

If you brush your teeth directly after eating or drinking something acidic, you could damage your tooth’s natural enamel. Wait a while before cleaning up.

Smoking

Smoking in terrible for your health generally, but it can really affect your teeth, leading to yellowing of the enamel, tooth decay, mouth cancers and other issues. Your teeth is just another reason to kick the habit for good.

Brushing too hard

While your intentions are probably great, brushing too hard can cause damage to your teeth and gums. Always use a soft bristle brush and gentle motions when brushing.
