Dental implants can be a fabulous option for people who are missing teeth. However, some people are still unsure of whether they can have them.  This article will help you understand if you are a candidate for dental implants.

Who Is The Perfect Candidate for Dental Implants?

The perfect candidate for dental implants is the person who has a perfectly fine gums, teeth and bone in their mouth.  However, if you are reading this then either you or your loved one most likely does not.  So let’s see what it takes to be a realistic candidate for dental implants.

  • Are your gums healthy? If not , can we get your gums healthy?
  • Is there enough bone to secure the implants to the jaw? If not is it possible to add bone?
  • Are you committed to taking care of the implants and gum tissue around the implants once your implants are placed?

The above questions are the three most important considerations when deciding if you can are a candidate for dental implants.  Our experience tells us that most individuals are a candidate for dental implants, however each case may require different methods to achieve success.

For example, Dr. Hendrickson has had patients told they cannot have implants because they do not possess enough bone.  After bone grafting and time, those same patients have successfully had dental implants because of the bone growth Dr. Hendrickson could achieve.

Dr. Hendrickson has had patients with medical conditions who thought that dental implants were impossible.  After a consultation with Dr. Hendrickson, will explained that certain medical conditions require certain protocols in order to have dental implants. Just because you have a medical condition does not mean you are automatically not eligible for dental implants.   Many people who thought they could not have dental implants end up quite satisfied and happy about their outcome!

What Conditions May Hinder Getting Dental Implants?

If your jaw is still growing you are not yet a candidate for dental implants.  This is typically 18 and under for women and 21 and under for men.

Are you expecting a child?  Waiting to get dental implants is standard protocol.

If you have had therapies such as radiation of the neck or head, we would consult with your doctor.

If you have had some IV osteoporosis drugs you may not be a candidate for dental implants.  Please check with our office.

I have diabetes and I have been told I can’t have dental implants?

If your diabetes is controlled, you are a candidate for dental implants.

We have many patients in our practice with diabetes who have also had dental implants.  The great news is as long as your diabetes is controlled we have always received medical clearance for you to have dental implants.

I take certain kinds of high blood pressure medications and blood thinners, can I still have dental implants?
